I have seen people putting up lists of keywords to show how well they do in search engine optimization. Granted they may have some highly placed keywords but those keywords/phrases usually have little if any real competition and in reality have a very number of limited searches done.
These lists were built to show how knowledgeable and experienced a self proclaimed SEO expert is and why you should buy their products.
I'm going to show you that in most cases a small amount of knowledge and some obscure keyword/phrase that anyone can get on the first page of a search result.
That is not to say a website using more common keywords cannot achieve high rankings. The requirements are the same...research, work and good optimization.

I chose Gizmos to do this experiment because I liked it and it represents fun.
To make sure it ranks highly I give it a modifier - The word Orange.
Does anyone actually search for a gizmo? The answer is yes and Google gives these numbers [gizmos]...Approximate number of searches in December 2008 - 9,900 - approximate overall average search number was 6,600.
My simple web site will compete with all the other sites where gizmo is used, a whopping, 6,370,000.
My modifier Orange gives us a whole new slant on the potential search competition. There are 371,000 web pages where the word gizmos and orange are part of a page.
The first two sets of numbers look remarkable but reality comes knocking with this next information. There is only 423 web pages where the exact phrase orange gizmos appear and these are not optimized well.
By watching how keywords can be manipulated is a good way to learn how to optimize your own website.
